Dogs primarily live with their owners, but some live outdoors and other dogs live in dog shelters while they wait for owners. Dogs also live around the world in many different cultures and with many different kinds of people.
Dogs were domesticated thousands of years ago and brought into homes, but it is not clear why or how this happened. Working dogs, like those that round up flocks of sheep, often live in the pastures with their charges to protect them against predators. Another kind of dog, the African Wild Dog, lives in the wild throughout the savanna, woodland areas and mountainous areas. These dogs are endangered.
