What Do Dogs Eat?

dog licking with tongueDomestic dogs are technically carnivorous, but they are usually fed either dry or wet dog food, with the occasional addition of meat or other scraps and treats. This fact makes them more omnivorous in nature, with grains and vegetables included as part of their diet. The African wild dog, located in the arid and savannah zones in Africa, are carnivorous and will eat anything they can catch, including antelope, rodents and birds.

Feeding a domestic dog dry or wet food is mostly a matter of owner preference, but if the dog is young, old or has any kind of illness or food allergy, wet foods may be preferred. These foods are also easier for older dogs with tooth issues to chew.
