In the wild, animals, such as mongooses, raccoon, wild cats and dogs, jungle cats, leopards and tigers, have been known to prey on peacocks. There are two well-known species of peacocks and these are the blue peacock, which is native to Sri Lanka and India and the green peacock that lives in the Indonesian island of Java and in Myanmar.
Technically, “peafowl” is a more proper term to refer to the species, with the term “peacock” reserved for the males of the species and “peahen” for the females. This species of birds can be found in wild in Southeast Asia, Central America and Central Africa.
When being chased by predators, the long, flamboyant plumage of peafowls can become handy. The long tail feathers of the peafowl falls off easily that when predators latch onto it, the peafowl can fly away to safety leaving their tail feathers behind.
