Pandas reach reproduction maturity between the ages of 4 and 8 years old and can continue to reproduce until the age of 20. Females ovulate in the spring, just once a year, and can only conceive for a period of 2 to 3 days during that time. Pandas use calls and scents to draw their mates.
The typical gestation period for female pandas is between 95 and 160 days. Female pandas can reproduce every other year due to this timeline, and in a female’s lifetime, she may be able to birth between five and eight baby pandas. Out of a litter of up to two pandas that a female may have, usually only one will survive to adulthood.
